Andropogon gerardii (Big Bluestem)
Big Bluestem is the grass that gives the tallgrass prairie its name. It grows from three to nine feet tall across the region and is prominent in mesic prairies.
The stem of the plant has a bluish tinge. Leaves can grow two feet in length, but are only about 1/2 inch wide. This specimen shows the three clusters of flowers at the top of the stem. Each seed has a hairy bristle. The plant flowers in the summer.
