Gentiana pubuerulenta (Downy Gentian)
Downy Gentian grows to 20 inches tall in mesic to dry upland prairies and open savannas throught most of the tallgrass prairie region. This specimen shows the stalkless leaves that are about two inches long and an inch wide. The dark blue flowers cluster at the top of the plant. Each flower is cup-shaped with five pointed lobes. It blooms from late summer into fall.
