Baptisia bracteata (Plains Wild Indigo)
Plains Wild Indigo grows in acidic and sandy soils of prairies and savannas. It blooms in spring and attracts bumblebees.
This specimen shows the compound leaf that consists of three leaflets. The plant grows to about two feet in height. The flower stalks sprawl outward and have alternate creamy flowers about one inch wide. Each flower is the typical shape of pea family flowers. Seed pods are about two inches long, hairy, and black.
