Aster (Asteraceae)

ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Aster (Asteraceae)

Aster pilosus (Hairy Aster)
Hairy Aster is often found in disturbed areas such as pastures, rather than in higher quality prairies. It has a weedy appearance with its narrow, pointed leaves and half-inch flowers. It gets its name from the hairs along the edges of the stem leaves.
The flower heads have about 20 white ray-flowers surrounding a rounded disk of about 20 disk flowers. The flower stalks feature needle-like bracts. The plant blooms from late summer to fall.
