Asclepias amplexicaulis (Sand Milkweed)
This specimen of Sand Milkweed shows the full length of the stems that grow to three feet in height. The opposite oval leaves are stalkless. This plant grows in dry, sandy areas of the prairie and blooms from mid-spring to early summer. The greenish-purple blossoms appear on a single flower head on each stem. Seed pods are up to five inches long.
