ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Milkweed (Asclepiadaceae)

Asclepias amplexicaulis (Sand Milkweed)
The Sand Milkweed grows in sandy areas in the southern tallgrass prairie. It frequents areas that have been disturbed or have sparse vegetation. The plant reaches a height of three feet. This specimen shows the unbranched stem and stalkless opposite leaves. One flower head usually tops each long stem. Each greenish-purple flower is about 3/4" long and made up of five curved petals around a cuplike structure called a hood. It blooms from mid-spring to early summer. Blossoms are followed by long seed pods.
