Asimina triloba (Pawpaw)
The pawpaw is an understory shrub or small tree that grows to 30 feet in moist soils of flood plains. its range is from southeast Nebraska eastward to western New York, south to northwest Florida and west to eastern Texas.
The oval leaves are in two rows on short stalks. Bark is thin and dark brown. This specimen shows the 1 1/2" brown flowers composed of three triangular outer petals. The fruits are three-to-five-inch long curved brown cylinders reminiscent of bananas.
