String Star Quilt, ca. 1940
Made by Eliza J. Yoder Yoder (1885 - 1963)
Eight diamond shapes are used to make this star pattern: four of them are pieced from strips or "strings" of fabric. Two sides of the quilt have string-pieced borders. This quilt is made of wool, cotton, rayon, and various blends. It is hand quilted with a diamond grid in the pieced blocks, tulip vines in the sashing, classic cable in the inner border, running rope in the pieced borders, and fans in the outer border.
The backing is dark red cotton with one blue cotton strip. It has cotton batting and applied black cotton sateen binding.
