Sunshine and Shadow Quilt, ca. 1940
Made by Edna Bontrager Helmuth (1900 - 1982)
This design consists of square patches that are arranged in a diamond pattern. Edna pieced the quilt top from various fabrics including wool and rayon and added four borders. She quilted a feathered wreath design in the center and cables in the borders with a heavy cotton thread of variegated color. She used black sateen for the backing and white cotton batting. She folded the back fabric to the front and stitched it down for binding.
