Man with Two Oxen
Edgardo Simone (1890 -

plaster
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cheskin

Edgardo Simone was born in Brindisi, Italy. He studied at several schools in Rome, including the Institute of Classics and the Ecole dex Beaux Arts. Simone created monumental sculptures for Czar Alexander II in St. Petersburg in 1912 and in Sao Paulo, Brazil (1919), as well as many war monuments in Italian towns. He worked for the Illinois WPA sculpture program in Chicago.

The style of this carved plaster piece is reminiscent of classical sculpture, such as that of Babylonia. The details of the oxens' heads are stylized.
