Macena Barton (1901 - 1986)

oil on canvas, 1938
30 x 36 inches

Macena Barton was born in Michigan. She came to Chicago in 1921 to attend the Art Institute, where she also exhibited her work for many years. Barton painted until she was 81 years old. To support herself financially, she worked as a proof reader at a publishing company. She worked for the Illinois WPA Easel program during the Depression. One of the important Chicago painters of the mid-century, both Modernists and Conservatives appreciated her work.

Oil paint is a mixture of powdered pigments in an oil base. Oils are usually painted on a gesso-primed canvas stretched on a frame.
