Quilts by Bertha Stenge
[Picture of the quilt: Star and Hexagon]

Star and Hexagon
1940s
Hand-pieced and quilted cotton

Collection of Jean Wishnick

Bertha used the same basic star and hexagon pattern from her prize-winning quilt to create two other quilts with very different colorings. This quilt shows Stenge's experiments with darker, more intense colors. Using her understanding of color theory, Stenge tried a color scheme using secondary colors from the color wheel: the greens, purples, and golds that she found in fabrics of the 1940s. The third quilt experiments with color values, using light, medium, and dark solid and print fabrics of primarily blue, red, and green.
