Speakeasy
Elliot Orr (1904 - 1997)

oil on masonite, 1934
12 3/8 x 16 3/16 inches

Elliot Orr was born in Flushing, New York. He attended Grand Central Art School, under the tutelage of George Luks. He worked for the Massachusetts WPA easel program while living in Cape Cod. His work has appeared in exhibits and museums across the United States. Critics labeled his style as Romantic.

Oil on masonite was a common medium for painters in the WPA. Masonite could be cut to size and did not have to be stretched like canvas. The artist gessoed the board and painted on it with oil paints.
