Louis Lozowick (1892 - 1973)

Louis Lozowick was born in the Ukraine. He attended Kiev Art School from 1904 - 1906, then immigrated to New York. There he studied for several years at the National Academy of Design. He also attended Ohio State University. Then he traveled for five years through Europe. As a result of his tour and conversations with artists, he authored Modern Russian Art. He also worked as an illustrator for magazines.

In New York again, he worked for the city's WPA graphics program and murals program. He became interested in the Constructivist Movement of Art, which began in 1917 in Russia. This style used Industrial Age materials to create abstract art pieces that incorporated functionalism and utilitarianism. Lozowick was best known for his lithographs of skyscrapers, of which this image is typical.
