Forest fire
Paul Landacre (1893 - 1963)

wood engraving on paper, circa 1937
8 x 6 1/4 inches

Paul Landacre was born and raised in Columbus Ohio. He attended Ohio State University. He worked for the California WPA graphics program. Later he taught at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Landacre is best known as an illustrator of books, such as The Natural History of Trees, published in 1953.

Wood engraving, in which the artist can carve into a block of wood with metal etching tools, allows the artist to create finely textured areas. Here Landacre achieved fine white dots representing the crops in the fields and delicate cross-hatching in the clouds.
