Don Freeman (1908 - 1978)

lithograph on paper, 1937
9 1/8 x 12 inches

Don Freeman was born in California, went to school in St. Louis, and attended the Art Students League in New York. He studied under John Sloan and Harry Wickey of the Ash Can school. He was also influenced by the style of Daumier. His early paintings depicted inner city life of New York working class and under-class people. He earned a living by playing trumpet in clubs and at functions. He also worked for the New York City WPA graphics program. Later his career was that of fine artist, illustrator, and cartoonist, as well as printmaker.

This lithograph dislays the many textures possible in drawing with this medium. It reflects Freeman's interest in social issues during the Depression as these desperate people line up for aid.
