Moccasins
circa early twentieth century

This pair of moccasins was presented to the collector "Avenal Hollenbeck by the Chippewa Indians and worn by her when inducted into their tribe under the name of Wah-ba-nah-nang, meaning the Morning Star." Charles K. Carpenter obtained them and donated them to Polo High School. They were made in Minnesota.

The moccasins are cut and stitched leather edged with light blue cloth and beaded floral motifs on the top and flaps. The beadwork is in dark blue, grey-blue, green, white, clear, pink (2 shades), ivory, and silver, faceted, iridescent seed beads.
