IAAA Field School Grant

The IAAA Board of Directors has authorized a grant, up to $500.00, to be used to help fund field schools. The amount may be awarded as one grant, divided into two or more grants, or not awarded at all. This grant is to be available yearly. The field school must meet certain requirements in order to receive the IAAA Field School Grant. Field schools must be:

  • Public: Participation in the field school is not limited to continual enrollment in the school or becoming a permanent student at the school.
  • Advertised: The field school receiving the grant must be described in Illinois Antiquity, including information on enrollment and program cost.
  • Recognized as sponsored by the IAAA: Advertisements for the field school must state that it is sponsored by the IAAA.
  • Discounted: Members of the IAAA must be allowed to participate in the field school at a discounted rate. If participants choose to join IAAA at the time of enrollment in the field school, the discount will also apply.
  • Professionally taught: Directors of the field school must be recognized professionals.
  • Reported: A final report (or preliminary report if the field school is part of a multi-year-project) must be presented to the IAAA for its archives and publication in Illinois Antiquity or REDISCOVERY.
  • Documented: All appropriate forms, including Illinois Archaeological Survey site forms (if applicable) must be filled out after completion of the work. Artifacts from the field school must be placed in a recognized public repository.

Applications for the IAAA Field School Grant will consist of no more than a three page, double-spaced, typewritten request proposal. Curriculum vitae of the Principal Investigator(s) also must be submitted at the time of the proposal. The proposal should address the requirements needed to receive the grant as outlined above, including such specifics as cost of the field school, discounts to IAAA members, and outline for completion of reports. The proposal should also address goals of the field school, work that will be carried out, and how the field school achieves the goals of the IAAA. The proposal should be specific in detailing how much money will be needed and how it will be spent, for the grant may be divided to fund more than one field school. All applications should be sent to the Chairperson of the Grant Committee, Sara L. Pfannkuche.

The Grant Committee will evaluate the proposals and submit recommendations, along with reasons for the recommendations, to the IAAA Board of Directors. Recommendations can be a single winner, multiple winners, or no winner. The entire IAAA Board of Directors will then vote; the winner(s) of the grant needs a majority vote of the board. The winner(s) of the grant will be announced at the annual meeting of the IAAA as well as in Illinois Antiquity.

The winner(s) proposal will also be printed in Illinois Antiquity. For grant application deadlines contact Sara L. Pfannkuche at the address below and mail all proposals to: IAAA Field School Grant Proposal, c/o Sara L. Pfannkuche, 15273B Wittwer Road, South Beloit, Illinois 61080.
