basalt

Columnar Basalt igneous Germany When molten lava spreads out over a landscape, its surface cools quickly. The surface contracts as it cools and forms three-pronged cracks, at 120-degree angles. As the lava continues to cool, the cracks spread, joining to form five- or six-sided columns.
