In the driftless area, ferns grow in crevices of the exposed rocks and cliff faces. Slender lip fern (Cheilanthes feei) is small and grows on rock ledges.
Smooth cliffbrake (Pellaea glabella) grows on overhanging ledges and on hillsides.
Bulblet bladder fern (Cystopteris bulbifera) also grows on stepp hillsides and cliffs. Bulblets on the leaf undersides drop off and reproduce quickly.
