Mississippi grass shrimp

These small shrimp live in backwater lakes. They feed on plants in the lakes. They are so transparent that you can see green plant material in their intestines. The Mississippi grass shrimp prefers a habitat with aquatic plants. It is now uncommon in Illinois. Soil erosion has clouded the water and killed the plants it needs to survive.
