Some beavers build dens with underwater entrances along the banks of streams and lakes. Others build lodges and dams in the open water using branches, sticks, and mud. Beavers are herbivores; they eat grass, leaves, twigs, bark, duckweed, water lilies, and cattail roots.
The plant on the left with lavender flowers is marsh smartweed. There is a smaller variety of this plant that grows as a weed in most gardens in Illinois.
