State Mineral

That's not it. Galena, although important in the state, is not the State Mineral of Illinois. The mineral galena is found in the northwestern portion of the state, notably near the town of Galena, the county seat of Jo Daviess County. Galena (lead sulfide) is a very dense, soft, gray-colored ore of lead. It is mined as a source of that metal. When it breaks galena forms cubes.
