State Prairie Grass

Corn or Maize?

Sorry. The State Prairie Grass of Illinois is not corn or maize (scientific name Zea mays).

Corn has been grown in Illinois for about 1400 years. It was originally domesticated in what is now Mexico. After it was introduced from the southwest, corn became a popular crop among numerous Native American groups. Today, corn is one of the most important agricultural products of Illinois.
