Cellars on a German Farmstead
This image shows two cellars on a 1870s to 1880s German farmstead in
Woodford County, Illinois. The larger of the two cellars in the foreground
was excavated in two quarters. The cellar was lined with wood, and the
entrance was at the northern (far) end.
The smaller cellar in the background was more irregularly shaped. This
farmstead was investigated in 1988 as part of the Interstate 39 archaeological
project funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
