Corelle, introduced in 1970, was extremely popular because it was so inexpensive. A place setting consisted of a large plate, medium plate, bowl, cup and saucer. A boxed set of four sold for $19.95. It was also break-resistant, and Corning promised to replace any broken pieces free for the first two years. During its first two years of sale, Corelle sold over 60 million pieces. This set was purchased as everyday dishes by a newly married couple in 1974. They chose the Gold Butterfly pattern, which was the most popular pattern in the Corelle line.
