ISM Mastodon Mount

This picture shows the front view of the mastodon mount at the Illinois State Museum main facility. The mount is a composite specimen; in other words, it is composed of the bones from several individual animals. Most of the bones come from the deposits at Boney Springs, Missouri.

Mounting a mastodon such as this one is an enormous job.

You can find out more about mastodons in the Midwestern U.S. 16,000 Years Ago online exhibit.
