The Dickson Mounds Museum presents Native American Game Day on Sunday, October 21, 2012, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.  Visitors of all ages will enjoy a variety of intellectually stimulating and physically challenging games.  Participate in a variety of Guessing Games, Skill Games, Throwing and Rolling Games, and Hunting, Stalking, and Warfare Games.  Enjoy playing Buzzers, Jack Straws, Knotty, Ball Drop, Double Ball or throwing an Atlatl.  Group games will be played intermittently through the afternoon.  Games were played not just for amusement, but also for strengthening important life skills. 
 
Games will be held outdoors weather permitting.  So, please dress appropriately for the weather.  In case of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors.  Admission is free. Find out more ...

The Dickson Mounds Museum presents Native American Foodways on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 1:00-4:00 p.m.  This free event will illustrate how ancient Native Americans acquired, processed, and stored their food with an emphasis on the technology used to do so.  Whether food was gathered, hunted, or cultivated, ancient Native Americans used innovative means to accomplish these tasks.  Visitors will enjoy a variety food demonstrations throughout the afternoon and they will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities.

 The Dickson Mounds Museum will be hosting a traditional Native American Winter Gathering on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.  The Second Annual Winter Gathering will celebrate, honor, and remember the gifts of our ancestors.  The event will feature a variety of activities and demonstrations, including storytelling, music, group games and dances, and crafts.  Native American vendors will open with morning activities beginning at 10:00 am.  Lunch will be available at the Museum between noon and 2:00 pm followed by drum music marking the opening of the afternoon activities.  Participants will journey to Dorothy’s Grove to honor and remember ancestors and view a special pipe ceremony.

    Hickory Ridge Concert Series: Chril Vallillo CD Release Concert

    Illinois singer-songwriter Chris Vallillo will celebrate the release of his 7th recording The Last Day of Winter with a special CD release concert Saturday March 16, 2013 at 7:30 pm at the Hickory Ridge Concert Series at the Dickson Mounds Museum in Lewistown, IL.  Vallillo, who has long been known as a musician who makes the people and places of “unmetropolitan” America come to life in song, will be joined by Grammy nominated percussionist Rocky Maffit for the show which will be videotaped for later broadcast. 
     
    While some might disagree, Vallillo clearly believes “There is no such thing as too many guitars!”  And with this new recording, he takes that claim seriously.  For years he collected and restored old stringed instruments, some high quality, most quite inexpensive, but each with its own unique voice.   With The Last Day of Winter, Vallillo uses this unique collection of voices to create a distinctive recording of original and American roots music heavily featuring his unique bottleneck slide playing.     Dickson Mounds Museum is offering a new monthly program series for mothers and their young children in 2013.  Fun for Moms & Tots will be held on the first Thursday of each month at 9:30am in the Museum’s Discovery Center.  Some activities may be held outside weather permitting.  On April 4, 2013 Moms & Tots will help plant a tree on the Museum’s grounds.  Afterwards, tots will have an opportunity to create paintings using sticks and leaves as their paintbrushes.

    Be an Archaeologist for a Day

    Dickson Mounds Museum is hosting “Be an Archaeologist for a Day” for kids ages 9-16 years old on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.  Kids will work side by side with professional archaeologists and learn excavation and artifact identification techniques, and how to process finds.  The program will begin with hands-on preparatory activities indoors, and then, weather permitting, will be held outdoors for the afternoon. 
     
    The program fee is $2 for Illinois State Museum Society members and $4 for non-members per child.  Registration is required with a deadline of Friday, April 5, 2013.  Space is limited with a maximum of 12 participants.  Each participant is required to provide his/her own sack lunch, drink, and snacks, and must dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor work.  Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America encouraged to participate as this program may fulfill some badge requirements.

The latest “-ism” (or movement) in art are images which we tweet and re-tweet, visually reacting to our environment.  Be a part of the “-ism” at the ISM during Old Canal Days weekend.  First, view the exhibition Fragile Relations: Art, Nature, and Environment at ISM Lockport.  Then, respond to any one (or two, or three) of the art on display by creating your own photos relating to a favorite piece that you see and post the image through ISM Lockport’s Twitter feed.  Don’t have a Twitter account, submit pics to our Facebook page or via email to the staff and they’ll add it for you.  Specific instructions will be available at the Museum.  Offered during Old Canal Days 2013.

Curators Doug Stapleton, ISM Chicago Gallery, and Jennifer Jaskowiak, ISM Lockport Gallery will introduce you to two historic Illinois artists who worked in the early 20th century:  Mary Agnes Yerkes (1886-1989) and Julius Moessel (1871-1959).   Exhibition curator Jennifer Jaskowiak will speak about the remarkable life and work of Oak Park native Mary Agnes Yerkes; most noted for her light filled paintings of the national parks and Pacific coastline.   German-born artist Julius Moessel arrived in Chicago in the late 1920s after nearly 30 years as a painter of interior architectural decoration.  Assistant Curator Doug Stapleton will talk about the many aspects of Moessel’s work as an observer of the natural world.  This event is part of our free Sunday Series for the exhibition sketches, journals, preparations.
