ISM Research & Collections Center
Wednesday, September 04, 2013, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Presented by Kemia Sarraf, M.D., M.P.H., genHkids Founder & President

True preventive medicine begins in our day-to-day living!  Every choice we make regarding nutrition and activity impacts our health and the health of our families.  In these hurried and harried times, it has become increasingly easy to forget that we still have choices, and that those choices are ultimately matters of priority, habit and skill acquisition.

Without their health, this generation of children will be lost.  Poor nutrition and physical inactivity are critical health issues which lead to a host of medical issues, the most serious of which are diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and musculoskeletal disorders.   Our most socially and economically vulnerable children are also our most at-risk with regards to their health.  Our social safety net must address and protect not only their immediate physical safety, but also their long-term health and well-being.

The barriers, both real and perceived, are formidable.  Time constraints, financial considerations, intergenerational habits, and dearth of skills can seem insurmountable obstacles.  They are not.  One child at a time, one family at a time, one school at a time, one community at a time, we can and must face down these challenges, adjust our priorities, and tell the truth:  these are our children, these are our communities, and it is our responsibility.

Illinois Valley Archaeological Society Lecture
ISM Dickson Mounds Museum
Wednesday, December 04, 2013, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Dr. Duane Esarey, Illinois State Archaeological Survey, will present a lecture titled: Untangling the Piasa's tale: A revised interpretationat the Wednesday, December 4, 2013 meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society.  The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m.  This lecture is free and the public is invited to attend.

Lost accounts and contradictory details have made painted images on the rock bluff at Alton, Illinois an enduring source of mystery.  Jolliet’s original 1673 drawing was supposedly lost, the paintings disappeared before authoritative renderings were captured, and local accounts of the images’ meaning were badly confused.  This presentation verifies a contemporary drawing fitting the description of Marquette’s account as coming from Louis Jolliet and uses a Peoria Indian culture-hero account to decode the long-lost meaning of the Piasa.  In the process a new supernatural character shows how related imagery in Mississippian and earlier iconography must be reinterpreted.
