Physicians-in-training (residents) can lose compassion for, and understanding of, their patients as residents attempt to master their chosen profession.To combat this lack of understanding and compassion, resident physicians at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine participated in an interactive poverty simulation designed to: (a) teach them the issues facing people living in poverty, (b) help them understand the issues that prevent patients from being compliant, and (c) help them become more compassionate toward the poor and poverty-stricken. Tot Time: Fun for Tots and Big People

Dickson Mounds Museum is offering a new monthly program series for parents and their young children in 2013.  Formerly known as “Fun for Moms & Tots,” Tot Time: Fun for Tots & Big People will be held on the first Thursday of each month at 9:30am.  Some activities may be held outside weather permitting.  On May 2, 2013 the program will focus on flowers.  The craft project includes using a photo of the tot provided by the parent.  Activities will be held at the Museum’s Picnic Shelter weather permitting. 

Admission is free and registration is not required.  Participants should dress appropriately for the outdoors. Find out more ...

On Thursday, May 16th, The Nature Conservancy’s Tharran Hobson will discuss the rare birds that have returned to the area since the Emiquon restoration project began in 2007.  Over 90% of Illinois Threatened or Endangered wetland related bird species and over 60% of all Threatened or Endangered bird species have been recorded in the Emiquon Preserve.  The size and variety of habitat at the Preserve remains a beacon for several bird species.  The area has become an important migration route and nesting destination for birds.
