Roberta Elliott The Velvet Hammer, Ltd.
I started blacksmithing in 1978, while a physiology graduate student at SIU Carbondale, wanting to become a farrier. There I discovered there was more than just horseshoes to be made. Since then I have tried to develop a distinct style with a feminine personality. My passions are forge welding and working pipe, which I try to combine as often as possible. At first I only made functional item for the home. Currently I am exploring more sculptural pieces.
I joined the Illinois Artisan Program in its second year. I have won 2 James Thompson merit awards. Along with galleries around the country, I show my work in art shows in the Midwest, where I have won many awards, including several at the Old Capitol Art Fair in Springfield, IL. One year I won 1st and 2nd at the Professional Art Exhibit at the Illinois State Fair.
