Representation of Humans and Human-Made Objects

Pottery sherds with inscised images of human heads, Cahokia site.

Objects created by Mississippians and depicted in their art include domesticated plants, tools, and a few symbols of chiefly power. Humans are an animal that may also be considered part of the man-made Mississippian world. Many of these man-made objects are closely tied to symbols or mythical beings whose meanings are difficult to interpret. Others, however, reflect the importance of the tool or domesticated plant in the Mississippian world.
