As much as we could, we used freely available open source software in developing this site. Where possible, we make the source code available.
Web pages
The Harvesting the River site consists of two main divisions of information, first there are the archives of images, and video or audio clips which are served from a database described below. The other main portion consists of the pages containing interpretive narrative describing the lifeways and history of the Illinois River, and using selected items from the archives. These pages are a combination of dynamically produced header and footer portions with static content in between. In production, the content developer created a new page by loading a standard template, which was then edited and saved as a static file. There are several include files: local.inc.php contains paths and a few other local settings, one of several menu files based on topic, and the main "harvestpage" class file harvestpage.inc.
