Refrigerated Box Car
These cars were filled with ice blocks insulated with sawdust, then packed with smallmouth buffalo fish in New York Boxes. The ice lasted long enough to allow shipping as far away as Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York when the weather was mild. Live fish were also transported in train cars fitted with large tanks of water flanked by ice blocks.
