The Washboard, Megalonaias nervosa (Rafinesque, 1820), remains a preferred species for use as the nucleus for culturing pearls in Japan, although it is currently unlawful to harvest it commercially in the Illinois or Mississippi Rivers. (Conservation status: Currently stable).
